The new gambling hub was added by rockstar games on july 23 and proved to be a big hit with the game's online community, as people swap over their in-game cash for chips to play.

There are a number of games to play inside the casino, too, including slot machines and betting on horse races, but the one feature that has caught the attention of many players is the huge lucky wheel that gives them an opportunity to land some major prizes in GTA. So much so that an exploit has been uncovered for it.

For those who aren't aware, rockstar will be placing up to 22 brand spanking new vehicles in their casino and all it takes to drive one home with you at the end of the night is a lucky spin of a wheel. Each player should only really have one spin of the lucky wheel each day, but there's a new cheat that can allow multiple tries.

The wheel includes other rewards, including cash prizes and character outfits, but there's a new trick that developers might not be aware of that enhances the chance of picking up a big win every day. It might seem very easy, but it will presumably be a huge time-consumer by the same token.

Those playing GTA online on console have discovered that as soon as you're made aware of the prize you have landed, if you quit out of the application and return to the casino in-game, you will be handed yet another spin on the lucky wheel. Clearly, this is something that shouldn't be allowed.

Some users on the GTA online subreddit claimed to have had up to 30 consecutive spins in the casino with a post on july 25, and it appears that some got what they were looking for.

"I got it after over 30 times," one said, after taking home a brand new truffade thrax vehicle - which is valued at over $2 million. Another, who is still yet to win the supercar, suggested that they were on their 77th spin but were still yet to hit the jackpot.

While more attempts are made available using the exploit, there's no guarantee that rewards will be on the way any time soon. Nevertheless, it shouldn't be possible.

Whether or not rockstar are actively looking into this problem or not is unknown, but clearly it's a strategy that undermines their intentions for the feature.

It's also worth noting that those who are using the exploit in-game could face consequences in the future and it's not advisable to attempt it in the casino.

The virtual gambling hub was added to the hugely popular GTA online game today as part of a downloadable update.

Although gambling in video games is controversial, players have been eagerly awaiting the casino's launch.

The casino building has been stood in san andreas since the earliest days of grand theft auto online, but it has never been accessible.

But after several years with an 'opening soon' banner draped outside, rockstar today opened the new gambling den.

"with something for everyone, the diamond casino & resort will feature lavish amenities, exclusive shopping, first-class entertainment and state-of-the-art gaming facilities," rockstar developers said.

Players purchase virtual dollars in the game, which can then be spent on chips.

It currently costs £5.99 for around $500,000 GTA dollars, which can be gambled away on virtual casino games.

Chips can be spent on poker, blackjack and roulette – as well as slot machines and even horse racing.

Winnings will be returned in GTA dollars, but it's impossible to convert these back into real-world cash.

GTA online is the multiplayer portion of grand theft auto 5, which is an 18+ video game.

However, it's possible – and even likely – that youngsters who own the game will take advantage of gambling features too.

Once inside, rockstar says, players can experience "the exhilaration of spinning the lucky wheel for a chance at life-changing prizes" while also enjoying "a range of sophisticated table games and much more".

The reveal has been almost six years in the making, but comes a matter of weeks after rockstar implemented gambling in red dead online.

In the US, GTA V entered the games sales charts at number one in late 2013, and has only been out of the top twenty for one month since.

That all adds up to a game that has now made around £5billion since its launch back in late 2013.

But video game gambling is highly controversial.

The news of GTA's casino comes after a heated row in parliament over whether loot boxes amount to gambling, and if such mechanics put players at greater risk of developing gambling problems later in life.

And on monday, the UK gambling watchdog told mps that it doesn't oversee the purchase of in-game content – including loot boxes.

That's because there's no way to make real money on the virtual winnings.

There are a few theories out there, including rockstar potentially wanting to avoid uproar about players gambling away their real cash on virtual games by introducing a second currency to GTA online that can't be bought with real money – chips are used as currency within the casino, which can be obtained from the cashier in limited quantities. With the release of grand theft auto online’s new casino update, los santos denizens now have a new go-to joke. Many players are saying they’re gaining digital gambling addictions, and are getting hooked on everything from blackjack to horse racing. Some even say they’re losing all their in-game money participating in the new activities.

To be clear, much of the chatter online from fans actually playing the new content is positive — folks like that they can jump into the new stuff without needing to be rich. So when people say they’re getting “addicted,” they mostly seem to mean it in a positive way. For GTA online, the ease of entry is a change of pace: generally, fans complain that it takes a lot of money or time to enjoy new additions to the game.

The casino DLC, on the other hand, lowers the price of entry, literally and metaphorically.

“A player at any level can walk in and buy any small amount of chips,” said zack zwiezen, GTA online expert (and former colleague) on twitter. “even just 500 chips or so with a little pocket change. They can then sit down and gamble and have fun for an hour and maybe win some GTA$.

Something that I find interesting is that most folks worrying about GTA online's casino and how exploitative it might be don't realize how nice it is compared to other parts of the game.

“compare this to the usual way updates work in GTA online,” he continued. “players would need to drop millions on new expensive buildings, to then grind for hours and days to earn more money to buy new expensive cars. And this content was locked behind needing friends to help and grinding.”

Lowering the gates like this seems to have helped GTA online tremendously this week. For about 48 hours after the casino was added, some players were reporting connection issues and difficulty hopping into matches, as the player numbers seemed to swell. But now that the dust has settled, people say they’re having a great time.

Although some are apparently losing it all in the process.

“GTA 5 got me going broke in game because I’m having trash luck in the casino,” one player said on twitter.

“theres a whole ass casino update on GTA 5 and I literally became broke in two hrs,” another added.

“fam the casino in GTA 5 is a scam lmao,” another said. “I spent 50 racks in like 20 mins. Never felt so broke before. In real life and fake life. Sheesh. This game getting way too realistic.”

“GTA added a casino and now my character is broke,” one said. “the game actually stopped me from buying more chips.”

“my BF is addicted to the casino on GTA, so much so he has just frantically sped to a ATM to withdraw 100k, only to be told he has spent his daily limit on return,” said an onlooker on twitter. “thank god this ain’t real!”

“I HAVE NOTHING LEFT,” reads a top-voted screenshot on the GTA online subreddit. Actually, the subreddit is full of memes where people commiserate over losing vast amounts of digital money in the casino.

Given that the casino DLC mimics gambling and players can technically buy shark cards with real-world money, discussions around the morality of this addition are cropping up on the web.

These conversations are partially spurred by growing concerns around exploitative practices in the video game industry, such as loot boxes. It brings into question the motivations behind making GTA’s casino easier to play: if more people are getting through the door, will a higher number of people feel incentivized to drop money once their in-game dollars runs out? Based on conversations I’ve had with a number of players and posts on social media, it doesn’t seem like the majority of players are dropping real cash on this aspect of the game, but only rockstar knows for sure.

But we also know that, when it comes to video game monetization, many games rely on the concept of “whales” — a small percentage of folks who spend an exorbitant amount compared to the average player. If most players aren’t aiding their in-game play with real-world money, it doesn’t necessarily paint a complete picture of whether or not GTA online’s casino poses a problem for at-risk players.

Of course, GTA online is hardly the first game to implement some kind of virtual gambling. But it is one of the most high-profile mainstream games to do so while allowing the use of real-world money, leading to the increased scrutiny.

Whatever the case, given that GTA online is a video game and not an actual casino, players are doing their best to game the system. One popular tactic, for instance, has players cheesing the lucky wheel for multiple spins. Others are simply sharing tips on how to properly play games like blackjack.

Some, it should be noted, are having great luck. But most people are learning the age-old axiom that the house always wins, which means that the casino is feeling kind of rigged for some participants. Fans swear that the game is actively cheating against them, given how often dealers seem to one-up amazing hands.
